Ashland celebrates 50th Anniversary
10/15/2018

Aaron Cameron, Ashland Site Manager, is excited to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of their plant.

TEXAS CITY, Texas (October 1, 2018) – In August 1965 General Aniline & Film (GAF) purchased 330 acres on the north bank of Moses Bayou to build the second high-pressure acetylene-based chemistry plant in North America. Although many sites had been considered across the country, Texas City was chosen for its industrial base, community, and available acetylene supply from Union Carbide. Our first class of Operators graduated in December 1967 and the entire plant was fully operational in mid-1968.

The history of GAF, as a company, started in 1868 as Albany Aniline and Chemical Co., in Albany, New York, as a producer of dyes.  In the 1940s, a GAF plant in Linden, New Jersey, began running trials making chemicals using high-pressure acetylene.  In 1956, GAF built a new plant in Calvert City, Kentucky, to make acetylene-based chemicals and polymers.  Demand grew quickly for these products leading to the construction of a new facility in Texas City, Texas.

GAF’s new plant in Texas City made two chemicals from acetylene supplied via pipeline from Union Carbide: Butynediol and Vinyl Pyrrolidone.  Butynediol was used to make chemicals used in plastic manufacturing and as solvents.  Vinyl Pyrrolidone was used to make Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) polymers.

Our name changed to International Specialty Products in 1991, and the plant was purchased by Ashland in 2011.  A few units were shut down due to newer technologies becoming available, but many more new units have been added at the plant.  Between 2013 and 2015 two new units came online and expansions were completed on existing units.  Between 2013 and today, we have been replacing and upgrading our infrastructure in preparation for our next 50 years.

Throughout that time our focus on producing high quality specialty chemicals and polymers in a safe and environmentally sound manner has only increased.

In May 2018 Ashland’s 185 Texas City employees celebrated four years without an OSHA recordable injury – what we call “preventable” injuries as all injuries are ABSOLUTELY preventable.  As of the beginning of October 2018 our employees have worked 1.6 million hours without a preventable injury.

We are Always Solving™, making specialty products that are used in many industries: energy, food & beverage, paints & coatings, pharmaceutical & medical, printing, and electronics.  Over 60% of what we produce in Texas City is exported to countries around the world.

Ashland designs, creates, and applies specialized chemistry in ways that amplify the efficacy, refine the usability, add to the allure, ensure the integrity and improve the profitability of customers' products and applications.
